SAN FRANCISCO: Facebook on Friday (Feb 25) restricted the ability of the Russian media to make money on social media as Moscow’s attack on neighboring Ukraine reached the streets of Kyiv.
“We are now banning Russian state media from playing commercials or making money in our area anywhere in the world,” said Nathaniel Gleicher, head of security at the telecommunications giant.
He added that Facebook “will continue to use labels in other Russian media”.
The parent company Facebook Meta said earlier on Friday that Russia would limit its resources to a ban after rejecting an order from authorities to stop using factories and labels that warn content on its platforms.
Social networking has become one of Russia’s attacks on Ukraine, which is home to sometimes misleading information but also real-time monitoring of a rapidly growing conflict that marks a major European national crisis for decades.
“Yesterday, Russian authorities ordered us to stop investigating independent facts and labeling content posted on Facebook by Russian government news organizations,” Mick Nick Clegg said in a statement. “We have refused.”
His statement came hours after the Russian media director said he had curtailed Facebook access, accusing the US tech giant of researching and violating the rights of Russian citizens.
On Wednesday, Facebook also unveiled a feature in Ukraine that allows people to lock their profiles for maximum security, using a tool the company re-installed after Afghanistan fell into the Taliban last year.
Gleicher said Facebook had set up a Special Operations Center that would monitor the situation in Ukraine “in response to military conflicts”.
