Russia and Ukrine conflict and relations:

Tension between Russia and Ukrine are at their highest in years, with a Russian troop build-up near the two nations’ borders spurring fears that Moscow could launch an invasion.

Ukraine has warned that Russia is trying to destabilize the country ahead of any planned military invasion. Western powers have repeatedly warned Russia against further aggressive moves against Ukraine.

In March and April 2021, Russia started to mass thousands of military personnel and equipment near its border with Ukraine, representing the highest force mobilization since the country’s annexation of Crimea in 2014. This precipitated an international crisis and generated concerns over a potential invasion.

Relations between the two countries have been hostile since the Revolution of Dignity, which toppled Ukraine’s elected president Viktor Yanukovych and his supporters, because he refused to sign a political association and free trade agreement with the European Union that enjoyed majority support in Ukraine’s parliament ..
Crisis:

In March and April 2021, Russia started to mass thousands of military personnel and equipment near its border with Ukraine, representing the highest force mobilization since the country’s annexation of Crimea in 2014.This precipitated an international crisis and generated concerns over a potential invasion. Satellite imagery showed movements of armor, missiles, and other heavy weaponry. The troops were partially removed by June. The crisis was renewed in October and November 2021, when over 100,000 Russian troops were again massed near the border by December.

Russia’s choices and the prospect of war in Ukraine:
Russia’s final option is to implement its compellent threat and to attack Ukraine. Scenarios range from a limited incursion that degrades Ukraine’s armed forces to a full-scale invasion. Putin has not occupied significant hostile territory before, but the scale of the forces he has assembled, and mobilisation of Rosgvardia units and military police – whose function is to control a population, not fight an army – increasingly point towards this.
Russia supportive countries:
After the dissolution of the Soviet Union, Russia inherited its close relationship with India which resulted in both nations sharing a special relationship. Russia and India both term this relationship as a “special and privileged strategic partnership”.
Russia neighbouring countries:
To the south Russia borders North Korea, China, Mongolia, and Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, and Georgia. To the southwest and west it borders Ukraine, Belarus, Latvia, and Estonia, as well as Finland and Norway.
