In a time of uncertainty, what remains certain is that teams have to remain productive as we embrace the often unpredictable future of work. That’s exactly what inspired Nenad Milanovic and his team to create a palette of tools aimed at helping people be productive in their collaborative work.
Milanovic’s company, COING Inc., is behind popular productivity products such as Clockify, a time tracker app, Pumble, a business messaging app, and Plaky, an upcoming project management tool.
Here’s what Milanovic has to say about the beginnings of the first app created in his team’s productivity arsenal:
“In 2016, we were tracking time as part of our client billing workflow. One day, after finishing a project, someone in our team noticed that we were paying quite a bit of money every month for the time tracker we were using at the time. The problem was, we were using only a handful of the features for that price — not to mention that the subscription fee increased since we’d bought it.
We quickly came to the conclusion that we might as well just make our own time tracker, for internal use. It would help us cut unnecessary costs, and let us focus only on time tracking features we actually needed.
Today, Clockify is the most popular time tracker in the market. Why? Well, because it has proven to be a useful and practical tool that caters to the needs of millions of people. And that’s one of the things I want from all
the products our team currently offers or plans to offer in the future — something people can use because it helps them streamline their workflows and be more productive as a result.”
Users can take advantage of Clockify for a variety of tasks including timekeeping, reporting, and management. With Clockify’s timekeeping feature, users can use a time tracker to keep track of every minute of their day and easily translate that data into a timesheet. The timesheet offers templates and reminders to help users effectively manage their week. The calendar feature then allows users to visualize their day and block off time for meetings or calls.
The software is compatible with Outlook and Google, allowing users to add events to their Clockify calendar from these other platforms. Using the Clockify dashboard, users can see where they spend their time and what their team is working on. Clockify’s “Reports” function allows users to see who worked on what projects, understand how much money they earn, review their team’s time, and export all that data. Other features include invoicing, tracking expenses, and even project budgeting.
Clockify is integrated with various other apps including Trello, Microsoft Teams, Salesforce, and Gitlab. The team provides video tutorials on their website, so it’s easier than ever for users to successfully manage their time, teams, and projects, by using Clockify.
So, what sets Clockify apart from their competitors? According to Milanovic, it’s their core value – freedom. Specifically, freedom from external investors. The startup did not accept any funding from venture capitalists, loans, or any other investor. They wanted to call the shots and found it better to invest their time and effort into perfecting their product and market testing rather than spending it on an investor search.
As a result of the company’s dedication to their product, Clockify’s customer support and communication are top notch. Customer satisfaction was always considered a top priority, and this commitment translated into a swarm of positive word-of-mouth reviews that launched Clockify’s popularity.
And why is productivity so important? Well, when you know how to be productive with your time, you have the chance to succeed at whatever you want — no matter how and where you start out. Milanovic now lives in Burlingame, California, and he runs a successful software company in Palo Alto — but he had modest beginnings, riddled with uncertainties that were common for the region where he grew up.
Milanovic states, “Throughout my childhood, in Croatia, where I was born, and Serbia, where I grew up after my family was forced to move when I was five, I lived in and witnessed insecure times. There was inflation, electricity restrictions, poverty, as well as political and societal conflicts.
It was a reality where you couldn’t tell if your family would be able to provide for everyone — even if you had any means of income, you didn’t know how long it would last. This situation made me realize that hard work and perseverance would not be enough to lead me to “greener pastures” — I also needed to work smart. And, to work smart, I needed to be careful with how I spend my time.”
From his humble beginnings to his vast success, Milanovic shares his five strategies to be successful. Those strategies are developing ideas well, always keeping customers in mind, bootstrapping, creating value, and learning the right leadership soft skills.
